It is possibly related to their duration of action.
While thiazides are longer acting, loop-diuretics like furosemide are short acting (4-6 hours).
Once the action is over, there may be activation of renin-angiotension-aldosterone system (RAAS) resulting in rebound increase in sodium retention with resultant hypertension. Thiazides do not seem to have this problem.
However, thiazides are not effective when there is renal failure, and loop-diuretics in higher doses can be used as antihypertensives in that condition.
