    Bleeding after sex

I'm 22 years old and a month ago I started having sex for the first time. I had decided that I no longer wanted to be part of the minority of the world (at least in my mind). The guy is a good friend of mine and is very nice to me. The questions is that we've had sex now five times and all times I've bleed afterwards. At the beginning we both understood that since I was a virgin I was going to bleed the first couple times, but now I am wondering if there is something wrong. Has anyone else been in this situation? Should I expect this to go away after a while?

    Hi,
I am a medical student and though I do not have personal experience in this, I can explain it for you.
Vaginal bleeding after sex is called post-coital bleeding, in medical jargon and is not normal, except possibly when you have your first sexual intercourse (due to rupture of an intact hymen). If the bleeding continues to happen, please see a gynecologist soon.
The common causes include infections (of vagina or cervix; cervix is the opening of the uterus/womb), inflammation (due to various causes, cervicitis) and cervical dysplasia (a condition of the cervix, that is considered to progress over time to cancer, but don't worry about that too much now).
Other less common causes like cervical cancer are unlikely in you as you are young and do not have a long duration of sexual activity or multiple partners.
The safest thing to do is to consult a gynecologist without delay, mostly for peace of mind. It could be just a simple infection.

BTW, did you have pain too?

    Appropriate response, medstudent.

Cervical fibroids are another consideration but I will let our Ob/Gyn also respond to this.

Going by the history, it seems more likely to be a hymenal tear after the first intercourse. Bleeding subsequently is due to lack of sufficient time needed for healing to take place.

Give it a few more days to heal and it should be okay. However, if this continues, you need to see a gynecologist to rule out infection and other rare conditions as mentioned by medstudent.
